I don’t believe in coincidences, particularly when it has to do with matters spiritual. This past Saturday, the Satanic Temple in Detroit celebrated the unveiling of “Baphomet,” Satanism’s winged, goat-headed icon to a partying crowd of 700. On Monday, the 1st reading at Mass was from the 32nd chapter of Exodus, which chronicles the idolatrous conduct of the Israelite’s at the base of Mount Sinai while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments.
The similarities are striking.
- The Israelites received a gift of favor from God who led them out of slavery. Many of the Detroit revelers undoubtedly in the past received the gift of Baptism, freeing them from the bonds of original sin.
- The Israelites rejected their gift and chose for themselves a god that was in opposition to God. The Satanist followers also chose to reject God, but one-upped the Israelites by choosing the ultimate one who opposes God.
- The Israelites were bored, anxious and stir-crazy and as a result were unwilling to follow God’s commandments. Detroit is reeling from an imploded economy, resulting in high unemployment and driving rampant crime and lawlessness.
What Moses did to the committed perpetrators when he came down from the mountain is telling:
Moses stood at the gate of the camp and shouted, “Whoever is for the LORD, come to me!” All the Levites then rallied to him, and he told them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Each of you put your sword on your hip! Go back and forth through the camp, from gate to gate, and kill your brothers, your friends, your neighbors!” The Levites did as Moses had commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell….
Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire and then ground it down to powder, which he scattered on the water and made the children of Israel drink.
I expect that many participants of this mockery of God in Detroit simply are ignorant of the deadly implications of what the are toying with, but that by no means excuses them. One of the safeguards against Christian infiltration that the organizers used was to have everyone sign a document freely giving their souls to the devil. It is never good to tempt the devil – he will always win. We MUST pray for the salvation of their souls, and for many exorcists to be at the ready for this battle.
I find comfort in picturing in my mind the great Archangel St. Michael, with his foot on the neck of Satan and sword and chains in hand. We know the result of that great battle of the Apocalypse – Satan is cast into hell. “May he be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.”
